Well, this explains it:
-bash-2.05b$ df -h .
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
itrda.clust.er:/u/ce107
                      492G  467G     0 100% /home/ce107

Someone filled up their home directory and the rest of us are now affected.
